well, I've already hit a snag. I can't rasterize..... do I have to be in a special mode to do so? Also, is 'grunge' just any brush you like that looks grungy?

I think you only need to rasterize the layer if you used the place function in the file menu. otherwise, it should be rasterized already.

Yes, any grunge brush you have should be fine. Or surf the web for some nice ones. the ones i have aren't great, so if you find a nice set, let me know.

It might be the wine I drank with dinner, but this is what I ended up with!

I started by trying to do the gradient like yours, but just couldn't get it to look good, and somehow ended up here! (the grunge looked naff with the background so I didn't do it).

I'll wait until you've done your tutorial to have a go at making it more like yours as I really really like the look you created. But in the meantime I'm happyish with this, even though it kinda looks like the telli-tubbies have vomited on the screen :-P

It's a start...

I can't believe how easy it was too, can't wait to try some more, thank you!

Your threshold looks good -- but you are right about the background.

I wrote up the tutorial, but it appears that imbedding images was disabled. I put up links to the images instead. You can find it here in the tutorials section. If the images are imbeddable again, I will update it. Have fun!
