I bought these geode slices at a gift shop a few months ago and I'm only now getting around to shooting them. They were inspired by some of Michael Brown's work (link goes to his blog, I'm not sure how long ago he posted his rock macros).
![]() Large ![]() Large I've combined 4 other shots like these for the "X-tych" assignment, I'll post those individual shots after the assignment starts. Thanks for looking! UPDATE 7/28: As promised, here is the Quadtych (is that a word?) that I'll use for the upcoming "X-tych" assignment: ![]() Large

Thanks, Peeper!
Setup is pretty simple for this one. The geode slice is sitting on a pane of glass with a white T-shirt under it for diffusion. The light (an SB-600) is directly below that only a few inches away. My camera is on a tripod with the lens at my closest focusing distance and I move the rock, not the camera between shots. Remote shutter release used because the focus is very fine and I don't want to mess it up (manual focus used). I thought I would need almost full power on the strobe for f/16, but most of the shots ended up being in the 1/32 to 1/8 power range, so there was plenty to spare . . . Glad you like 'em!

Hey Russ, that is awesome, the effect you got and then reading about how it was created, it is very involved. Love that there is a T-Shirt involved.

Thanks! I guess when re-reading my own description it does sound a bit involved, but as far as setup shots go there is a lot less to think about in this one than most . . .

The imagination is a great thing. We have some of these and I just never have gotten around to photographing them, although I have figured they'd be a good subject. I'm glad to see you actually have done it.

Thanks.
![]() Thanks! I have several more to post, hope to get to them soon. The colors and patterns really display well when they are brightly backlit.
