Default I even impressed myself!

Went to the range the other day and captured this image.

AH64 Apache LongBow by skersting66, on Flickr

Look at the Exif! An effective 1200mm with a 14# lens HANDHELD at 1/125. HA!
Camera Nikon D7000
Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 800 mm
ISO Speed 100

All of the shots were handheld as there was very little room on the platform walkway for a tripod. I did strap my tripod to the railing (legs together) where I was expecting the A10 action.... But the A10's didn't show and the helicopters weren't working any specific area.

To be honest, probably almost 1/3 of the shots I took were blurry at such low SS's. But still, I was quite pleased with those results.

Sorry for the brag.

That sir is pretty badass! Especially at 1/10 the ss you should have had. Yeah, I'm pretty impressed myself! Nice work!

I'm most impressed. Really nice shot.

I guess you were shooting these from a place other people go to shoot them? Shooting with a lens that long, from a distance it might look like a rocket launcher to them. I sure as hell wouldn't want to spook a couple dudes flying one of them.

Those things are like a great white in the water...a perfect killing machine.

Thanks all.

I was shooting from the range control tower. I have a fairly unique opportunity as I have access and communication with the aircraft when they are working the range.... I really should take more advantage of this.

The only "problem" is most pilots are not photographers...they have no comprehension of "lighting" etc.

We had the Apaches come up for a "portrait" after they were done (I can't/won't inhibit their training)..They were so damn close I couldn't get a picture @300mm.

Outstanding image. You should pat yourself on the back after that capture. Just don't break your arm doing it.
