Default Soccer Shot

Please let me know what you think of this shop. Is it a little over exposed? Is the crop too tight?

EXIF
Canon T1i
1/500
F/8
ISO 200
179MM

Thanks in advance.

I like the crop and the action is ok too. Why f/8? I would have used a larger aperture...f/2.8 or whatever the max is on your lens and a faster shutter speed. This would 1) blur the background more and 2) freeze the subjects better. 1/500 is the minimum you want, not ideal, so at ISO 200 and f/8, you had plenty of room to get a faster shutter speed.

I was shooting in burst mode. I was using AF lock mode so the camera would not have to refocus during the burst. By using f/8 I was hoping my DOF was wide enough that even if the action changed its distance to me I would still be in focus.

I was probably in Aperatur Priority mode so the camera selected the shutter speed.

I have only had the camera for a month and it is my first DSLR so I am still learning how to use it.

If I was going down the wrong path with these setting, please let me know.

Thanks.

I guess there is no right way and no wrong way. I generally use Av mode at f/2.8 and enough ISO to stay above 1/1000 and use AI Servo mode for focus. I prefer a blurred background that the large aperture helps with to isolate the players.

In your case, you could have upped the ISO to 400 (or even 800) to get a faster shutter with the same aperture (and other) setting(s).

The reason why you shoot at 2.8 or your lowest f-stop is that it give you a higher shutter speed to stop the action and because of the low depth of field, it blurs out the distracting background. On my computer it looks pretty much two stops over exposed.

I cropped the photo on both side and went into curves and bring down the highlights and middle tones. You need to save the posted pictures at 840 pixels on the largest side instead of 97. Makes the photo too small to see.

The pic in the original post is 1024x683. You have to click the image to see the large version. I personally like the slightly looser crop of the original, unless intended for newspaper.
