Default First action shots-Cheerleading

Just getting used to our Canon Rebel XS. Took these of my daughter in Indianapolis. Let me know what you think.

# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/200 second ===> 0.005 second
# Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 56/10 ===> ƒ/5.6
# Exposure Program = shutter priority (4)
# ISO Speed Ratings = 800
# Focal Length = 290/1 mm ===> 290 mm

First off, seeing your EXIF data would be a big help but I'm going to go ahead and assume a few things.

What mode are you in? Are you fully Auto or in TV mode?

Due to the blur of the shots I have to assume you are using a slower shutter speed (if you are in Tv (shutter priority) mode). In most low light situations like this the camera will force you to use a slower shutter speed.
Of course, get your ISO as high as possible so you can get the fastest shutter speed possible.

If there's a way to get your shutter above 1/250 at all, do it.

p.s. I think that first pic would look a lot better if it were taken in portrait mode. The other 2 are great! Keep up the good work.

Oops, sorry about that.

I was in TV mode.
Shutter Speed 1/125
ISO was AUTO
I believe f5.6 (Lens - EF 75-300mm f4-f5.6)

When I tried to put the camera in a higher ISO I couldn't get the camera to shoot multiple frames. I got to this setting more or less by trial and error.

Any and all feedback is much appreciated!

Merry Christmas.

The exif info shows 1/200, ISO 800, f/5.6 for the image showing. I don't know the max ISO for the Rebel XS, but ISO 1600 at 1/400 would have yielded much better results. Even if a bit noisy, you can fix that but you can't fix blur.

I've shot a gazillion cheerleading competition photos, 1/200 should have been fast enough to freeze the action in that the position your daughter is in is like a pose anyways. I suspect that your 290mm focal length has more to do with the blur than the shutter speed.

Probably true. I have the same lens as he does 70-300 but I have the IS version so I didn't think about camera shake.
