Thanks for the replies....
The shutter speed was 1/60 as I was directed to use that for most of the shoot by the photographer that hired me This was my first sports shoot so I went with that. I should have changed the ISO though. This race was down one lane and up the next but as they came out of the pool and ran to the finish line I was trying not to get in anyone's way hehe. The sun was also just rising which made it hard to see how the pics were coming out when I aimed in that direction. However I agree I should have shot it horizontal not vertical looking at it now. When I did the adult swim race I parked myself at the end of one lane and caught shots of them turning to the next line. I do not have those yet, I had to use his memory card. When he posts them on the site I will link you guys to them. Those shots should have some great facial expressions in them. So landscape mode to get more motion and change the ISO a bit. I will remember that. Thanks!! |

From what I remember he wanted me to use that in the early morning with re: to lighting. I should have changed it later.
He is also getting a lot of noise when he enlarges to print, I think I messed that one up as I had my noise setting low to get more high res shots. The action shots seemed to freeze for the most part, but not as frozen as I have seen pro shots. He is basically putting the shots up on a site for people to buy prints of if they want. I mentioned to him about a noise reducing program but I am not sure if he has one. From what I was reading about my camera it tends to be a noisier camera with "medicore" performance on that. It is a Lumix DMC-FZ8. So not a pro camera by any means. |

I have a similar Lumix - really nice camera, but not the best for low light sports.
On the noise issue, to me it comes down to a choice: noisy shots that can be cleaned up a bit in post v. motion blur. I'd take the noisy shots, personally. For swimming and other sports shots, getting in closer and getting the athletes eyes in the photo is a great way to give your photos impact. Keep practicing, and have fun.

Thanks for the tips on the eyes. On the adultt swim I got a lot of face shots so when I get those I will post them.
If you check out my portfolio I have now I have some nice shots of faces too. Thanksgiving Triathalon(not for sale) - klicksbykat's Photos |
