Tom - Shooting into the sun is tough quite a few reasons, one of which shows up most noticeably in your subject and in the guy right behind him in your original photo - the parts of their bodies facing the camera are in shadow.
To avoid this next time shooting in a similar setting, you can try spot metering for your subject, ideally the subject's face. Or you can meter for the whole scene and try to lighten just your subject in post (which works most of the time, but you just need to know when you take the photo that you'll have to work on it later). You can also use fill flash, if you're close enough to your subject and if flash is allowed. With practice, you'll more easily see the quality and the direction of the light, and will be able to plan your photos accordingly.
