Love the picture. I had forgotten how visceral boxing could get. Love the shot - and amazing noise performance. Good call on not using the flash. What lens did you use?

Just one suggestion though - I think you could crop a bit of empty space from the top of the picture.

How far were you from the ring? I don't see any evidence of the near ropes, I'm just wondering how you avoided them. Were you in a balcony?

How was the lighting above the ring? I just shot a boxing event Thursday, but the lighting was extremely poor and I had a lot of problems with color and white balance. I didn't want to use my flash, since I didn't want to distract the boxers.
I was on a balcony at this stage, was there with a film maker, and last minute he was asked to shoot the whole of George's fight as the video guy didn't show... SO I went up on to the balcony with him (I was ring side) There was one main light source above the ring, lots of light but not enough for a sport like boxing - just for you to note, flash has been accepted in boxing since ..well, for a long long time - the press shots I did were all flash lit, but these guys, the more artistic ones are more to my liking though.

Thanks all for crop ideas etc, appreciated.

Great shot, wonderful detail. I'd trim a little from the left side, at least get rid of that partial 'hand/finger' along the very edge. While I agree the audience is an integral part of the scene, I think they are a little too bright/dominant in this scene for perfection, but others may disagree. I looked at your web shot and loved that first image with the straight punch. Regardless of quibbles, you've got a great eye and your shots have power. I think leaving the flash in the bag was the right choice. You're getting good looking, clean shots even with the 2500 ISO.
