I find that it far superior to having the shutter button activate AF for two reasons:
1. I don't have to switch the lens to manual to avoid activating the AF when I'm prefocusing. This allows a quicker set up, and I always have AF available if I need to refocus quickly. Plus, I don't have to fiddle with the switch while trying to compose a shot.
2. I find that for servo mode, it is more comfortable and easier to maintain the thumb press than the shutter press.

Give it a try, on XTi's it's custom function 4.

Interesting method to use. I might have to try that.

I wish there was some kind of a focus-lock when using AI Servo (press the shutter half-way does not lock the focus if you move to re-compose the shot)

I have Canon xsi and I shoot alot of motocross and I have run into where the focus dot
is not on the rider it misses him or her and they show up blurry.
I shoot in TV between 1/800 to 1/1000 at iso 100 or 200 depends on the day.
I also created my own setting for a custom picture style which can make pics
look much better.

I have done a lot of road races and triathlon cycle stages this year. I was suffering from lack of sharpness untill just last weekend, it turned out to be the lens I was using. Winter season is close upon us so lighting is going to be a major factor and fun to overcome although I am confident I will get some good shots. The guidence given here will be a tremendous help.

Thanks
