Feels underexposed - the lurker looks well exposed but the subject is too dark underneath the curl.
It's too loose for my taste. I think the lurker I mentioned before needs to go - I don't think he adds anything to the scene - and using more of the 300mm of focal length you have would accomplish this. A tighter shot would show us more detail on your subject. Aesthetically, I also don't really care for the pier or whatever in the background. But if it adds to the shot by telling the location (I don't recognize it but a maybe a surfer would) then thats up to you. If you are going to keep the pier in the shot then I think you need more room above the light post or whatever. Basically I like the "free falling" one better, but wouldn't have cut off the top of the curl in that one. I can actually see his expression in the large version, I like that. Could they use a bit more color? EDIT: DOF, stopped action (Shutter speed) all that stuff looks fine. These are really close to being quite good. Keep it up you'll have really great shots in no time.
