Default Waterskiing Photograph

This photograph is quite old (by old I mean, November 2008) - however I'd love to know what you think I could have done better with this photograph as I am likely to be taking more very soon - also keeping in mind this was taken from the speedboat and I will be in the same position again

Info:
Make: Canon
Model: Canon EOS 5D
Shutter Speed: 1/800 second
F Number: F/2.0
Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO Speed: 640
Date Picture Taken: Nov 17, 2008, 3:13:49 PM

Thank you...

Wow that's pretty sick. I mean he's centered but you have to show that spray. Maybe go a little bit wider and pan up just a bit? Then you'd get to see all the spray and he'd have a little more room to his left.

Ideally you would want him off to the right side so you have a space for him to move into but you are going to cut even more spray out then. By waiting a split second later as he's going in the the carve could help achieve this although it wouldn't be such a front on pose.

The sharpness is excellent and the colours of the skier popping off of the overexposed water really work, I had to look a couple of times to see if it had HDR effect applied to it.

Very good shot and if this is the base you are working with when you go out again then you should get some good results! Look forward to seeing them

Wow - thanks for the detailed response. It really helps - would using a wide angle lens help me more?

Sadly (I think?) I have yet to develop the skill to do any HDR changes - but thank you!

It was a tricky thing - in my other shots, you can tell I couldn't decide whether to focus on spray, or the direction he was going etc. I'll try "wider" - thank you!

I would recommend that you shoot at 5.6 or 8 to try to get better depth of field. Freezing the water spray drops as opposed to being blurry can be quite impressive. Better DOF would also keep the rope in focus and visible, and creates a good focal line from the corners.

I don't want to spam your thread with my pictures, but I do have some in my photostream to better describe what I am referring to.
