Default Panning puppy shot

I have not done a lot of panning yet, but was in backyard the other day and got some that I think were OK - please let me know what I could have done to make this a better picture - cropped, even slower shutter etc. - thanks

There are some other panning shots in the "Random Photos" link under this picture. Comment on any - thanks.

I really enjoy pan shots.
My fav's due to the fact you can blur the background in a different way than stopping down.

I use my 70-300 lens for panning due to the fact it has a panning mode on it. I'm not sure exactly how much it helps me but I'm sure it does.

I've never used my 50mm lens for panning. (I'm assuming you used yours)

The only thing I can see that looks off on your settings is the shutter speed.

I've been told to go around 1/60 when I'm panning my dirt bike shots (as in my avatar) and they turned out ok. (I've still got a lot to learn though as my composition was off)
With a pooch that is moving much slower than a dirt bike I would assume you would need a even slower shutter speed but I could be wrong on that. Just try some lower shutter setttings and see what you get.

It's kinda funny, I enjoy taking panning shots so much I'm actually thinking about going to a baseball game (that I got free tickets to) just to get some pan shots of the runners running around the bases. And I don't even like baseball! lol

Panning shots.... every one love them when they are right.
From my experience - it will take sometimes many shots to get what you want. The greatest skill is get the shutter speed right.
Lenses ? if you got 50mm, use it.
Some of my shots are with 50mm f/1/4 in AF and some with 70-200mm f/2.8, my centre point is on the subject and i am tracking as he/she/it moving along. I may take few shots of the subject till i get the results.
In you shot, try adjust shutter speed down, and shoot in aperture priority.
Some of my shots:Panning-2
Nikon D3
Exposure: 1/13 sec at f/9.0
Focal length: 40mm
ISO 200
Flash: no flash (never use it)
Lens: 28-80 mm f/2.8

Second shot:Panning-1
Nikon D3
Exposure: 1/50 sec at f/4.5
Focal length: 58 mm
ISO 200

Hope it helps.
