Trying to show the feeling of speed and 'tightness' of this sport.

How can I make the first one look 'faster', yet capture how tight on the cone he is?

Hey, it looks like there's a problem with your direct linking, though I'm not sure what it is. The embed should've worked. I switched you over to a text link in the mean time.

Please note that critique only allows for one picture per thread, per 24 hours, I edited your post to reflect that.

As far as the image goes, it's way too loose. From that distance I'd be shooting at least 300mm.

One sure-fire way to make cars look like they're going faster is to slow down your shutter. Not to the point that it's a blurry mess, but enough to get blur on the wheels. Wheels not moving = parked car.

Thanks for your feedback, and apologies for the multi-photo post. I need to review the FAQ again. :-)

The sections with rules (critique, share your shots, etc.) all have the rules stickied at the top. I see you got the direct link working, any idea what the problem was?

Yeah, I missed up on several of them. Promise to do better in the future. :-)

Strangely, the DNS name for the link didn't resolve when using Internet Explorer (Smugmug uses a subdomain for each user). Neither did opening the URL when edited as you did -- until you manually entered the URL in IE's address field -- then the domain name apparently got cached and after that it worked. Opened fine in Firefox. Never seen anything like it!

I moved the photo over to Flickr to get it to work.

That's really odd, I'm using Safari, and the link worked fine.

The image you have posted now (I don't know what you had posted before the edit) is nice, without the busyness of the background (power lines, buildings, cars, etc) it would be very nice. It doesn't convey the speed though and definately doesn't convey any tightness - it's more about the location of the event. I would move 45 degrees or somethign to your right and fill the frame with the car by getting a LOT closer/longer focal length like the moderator suggested. I think that the angle and filling the frame will show how tight the car is on the corner (cone). For the speed aspect, slow the shutter down and practice your panning. I wouldnt go too crazy though or the cone will be too blurred to really show whats going on.
