That's the lowest DOP you'll be able to get with a f4.0 lens. You'll need to get a f2.8 if you want any more less DOP. BTW, I don't care whether you any have aspirations of turning pro, which is not what I said. What I did say was, " Just don't give your work away for free."

Thanks for your quick response Jim. Retirement makes the 2.8 'difficult!' Giving away shots is also unlikely - I'm only shooting one person - and HE wishes that I would put the lens where there is even less available light! But I understand (and agree with) your sentiments...

Jaypee,
I had a great time looking through your set on this race! Your shots are really great! I love how you've captured emotions along with the action. I MUST know - what was he really thinking on "How Many Laps...?" I also especially loved "Dripping" - they are all really wonderful shots of what looked to be a great time for everyone! Nicely done! G'day Jayne and thanks for the kind words...
I guess the faces and emotions are a throwback to my 'story telling' days (some samples on my Blog) but now I'm determined to become a better photographer - and I love the effect of a shallow depth of field. Jim's comments above would indicate that I'm going to face some challenges with an f/4 maximum lens - but I don't have many options! Your question regarding 'How Many Laps...?' - is a little embarrassing... That WAS the question! Most times I'm available on the track to shout laps and/or times - but this time we BOTH 'lost the plot' - I was too tied up with the new lens and got the count wrong! Luckily - the course marshalls were on the job and flagged him into transition safely. He went on to win by a comfortable margin. It was only a State Championship - so the win was expected - but next weekend he has a big one - an International event here on the Gold Coast. So... we both need to get our act together! I've just cruised your Flickr stream - and I love your stuff. I see that you have your own 'Dripping' shots! And I love that clenched fist... We're two lucky parents... Kind thoughts John |

Jim's comments above would indicate that I'm going to face some challenges with an f/4 maximum lens - but I don't have many options! I certainly understand the desire for equipment that makes what you want to achieve a little easier, but I must say, having the ability to tell a story with your photos - that's not something you can buy! I'm inspired to get in touch with that side of photography Your question regarding 'How Many Laps...?' - is a little embarrassing... That WAS the question! Most times I'm available on the track to shout laps and/or times - but this time we BOTH 'lost the plot' - I was too tied up with the new lens and got the count wrong! It was only a State Championship - so the win was expected - but next weekend he has a big one - an International event here on the Gold Coast. So... we both need to get our act together! I can totally relate! I wasn't on my "game" this last meet, either! Luckily, my kids are now old enough to marshall themselves for events but I really didn't know what was going on at any given moment because I was so concerned about my camera settings! I hope it gets easier. I've just cruised your Flickr stream - and I love your stuff. I see that you have your own 'Dripping' shots! And I love that clenched fist... Thanks, John! I am so excited to learn about photography and so much appreciate your contributions to my own efforts through your comments and your lovely pictures! We're two lucky parents... AGREED!! I can't wait to hear AND see how everything goes for your son next weekend! Best to you both! |

In the hope that it might encourage you to become a 'story teller with a camera' - here's a link to a little piece I wrote some years ago. It was originally intended as a tribute to my son's sports teacher - but got picked up by Blue Water Magazine as the first of several articles I wrote for them. There's a photography element to the story - but the pix are only very small versions of the originals... enjoy! It's the first one on the page - but the third one features the triathlete - 11 years ago!

Thanks Jim
I spent some time on your PhotoShelter site yesterday - and love your Japan stuff. I lived there for several years and your fishing sets in Northern Honshu are wonderful. But I missed the Hawaiian section - I'll go back in... Dozo yoroshiku... |

Domo Arigato!
I haven't gotten the Hawaii images up yet. I'm presently scanning images shot at a Civil War re-enactment to put online. I'll have the Hawaii images up sometime next week. BTW, I grew up in Japan, was there as a teenager from 1967 to 1972 (15 to 20 years age). That's where all my photography started. Been a 40 year ride of my life experience that I wouldn't have traded for anything.
