Cool shooting for the basket

DSCF1245

Hi Guys

i have just joined and am starting to get better at my photography. i dont have the best camera but i am doing the best with what i have. i took this photo but it didnt come out all that well. the light in stadium was terrible and i tried to adjust the settings but not sure i did it right. if you can suggest anything or if you can show me how you would fix this photo i would love to know some new techniques. i mainly have problems in low light indoor stadiums.

i am not sure if i have loaded the EXIF file correctly.

i have seen some of the work here and i think if i can get as good as that then i would be very happy

Jim i saw your mention of an article on basketball i must catch up with it.
looking forward to your suggestions.

here is the exif file

Exposure: 0.007 sec (1/150)

Looks like you're still in snapshot mentality where you are pointing the center of the camera directly at your subject. There's way too much floor and not enough ball.

Default Get the ball in the frame and in focus

You need to get on the either side of the basket near the 3 point line and get them coming head-on towards the basket and shooting. What you have here is the back of heads and too much wasted space. If you get nearer the basket you'll be able to fill the frame more. I'm not sure what lens you are using, but it's most likely the standard lens that comes with the camera, so you'll need to get closer to the basket.

Smile thanks for the feedback

thanks for the honest feedback. i took several others at another tournament that turned out really well. i was mainly interested in this one because a customer asked me about it.

the light in this stadium was bad for photography so i was trying to use manual settings without much sucess.

I answer to your question Jim yes it is the lense that came with it. Unfortunately you cant swap lenses on this one that is why i am investigating upgrading to a Nikon D60 at a reasonable price.

i will keep trying

I find that going to a site like ESPN or Sports Illustrated gives me an idea of what the "A-List" pros are doing. I can then try to emulate my positioning and the shots they are taking.

i hope you dont mind but i edited your second shot to give you more of an example of what to go for. if you have a problem with me doing so please say so and it will swiftly be removed.

you need to not be afraid to zoom in. i am not sure if it is because of your camera's limitations or what not but you need to distinguish your subject. in your second photo you have multiple subjects and the person viewing your picture will have to find the ball carrier which is your main subject. too many distractions will just make the person move on to the next photo.

Photobucket

again i only altered your photo with what i feel should be your shot. also do not be afraid to shoot portrait.

Smile thanks to everyone for suggestions

if anyone has any edits they want to do to give a better idea of what to do then go right ahead.

i switch to portrait mode if someone is creaming down the court on a fast break but most of the time i need to crop in landscape.
