Here is a shot i got with my Rebel XS with 18 55 kit lens, i wish i had a telephoto lens to get in closer to the action.
Is there anything i could have done to get this better with the equipment i have? I was so amazed by the beautiful colors of the sky I almost forgot I wasn't in the landscape critique forum and had to make myself look at the kite skiers.
I know nothing about this type of photography but I will lend you two eyes and let them know what they see. This looks to be a difficult shot since the parachute is much higher than the person skieing. Atleast for the one in the foreground. It takes awhile to get from the skier to the kite, but not much you could do about that. If you want to forget about him and concentrait more on the other person than a simple crop should bring him in much closer. Don't know what type of PP software you have but I use Picassa and have done this on a few ocassions since I have the same lens you do. Of course you could keep both people in the frame and just crop out the top half of the picture and I think it will direct more attention to the people and less of the sky. This is new to me aswell. Looks fun yet very, very cold. We seldom get snow here in East Texas. Anyways, hope my critique has helped some since this is a new forum to me.

Thank you Tom,
It was my first time at this kind of picture, i am more into landscape too. i did try to crop to the further skier but the picture becomes too pixelized and i don`t like it. I want to buy a lelephoto lens for this type of occasion so i can zoom in on a particular subject but for now the money is a little tight! Hopefully in a near future.

Well barabe you done the right thing. This was something you was new to, therefore you grabbed your camera, took a few shots and posted it here for help.
Everyone has to step out of their comfort zone and attempt new things without a fear of failure. Sorry I don't have more experience with these type of shots but hopefully others will take the time to offer their advise and critique. Congrats again on the courage to attempt something new.

I agree and think this picture is awesome as is. The serene landscape mixed with the exciting sport blends well here. Pretty sweet!
