Default Moving water detail...

I like whitewater kayaking and photography and am trying to put the two together. The idea in the picture is to get into a wave and then surf for a while, forwards, backwards, sideways and then real action like cartwheels etc.

The shot below is from my Sony point and shoot. (next summer I'll be better equiped) I think it is overexposed, it has no pp. I find all my watershots don't show the water good (the white pile of foam lacks detail), is that because of the long exposure of the point and shoot?

Any other tips/suggestions for this type of photography?

I didn't realize my point and shoot would have the exif until I dug in the properties...

Welcome to DPS! This past summer I spent quite a few weekends in Wausau Wisconsin doing this very thing. Photographing not actually Kayaking! I loved every minute of it! Here's a link to my Flickr pool of Kayaking.

Kayaking

Man!! I must of taken 5000 shots this past summer. You never know when your going to get a good capture. I kept my camera in Burst mode. That probably will be the biggest difference between a P&S & a DSLR. On bright sunny days I was able to get my camera up to 1/4000th of a second. That's as highest as my Nikon D80 will go. Sometimes I even had to adjust my aperture in order to not over expose. The lens I used was the Nikkor 18-200mm. Take a look at some of my shots & you can click on "More Properties" to get an idea of what shutter speeds you'll need to get the appearance that you looking for. If nothing else, I think you'll get a kick out of them.

use a faster shutter. that will bring out every little detail in the water. slower shutter's makes the water sort of blend together. it will also help with your pic being slightly over exposed.
