Runners - Compostion

I shot this photo yesterday at a local running event.
I finished my 5K (with a new personal best of 26:41) and took the rest of the time shooting the 10Kers who were still on the course.
This is my favorite shot of the day, but still I didn't think of it too highly for some reason.

What do you think of the composition? I tried to get in a spot where the running track would lead you down the photo, hopefully that was accomplished.
Of course, any other comments are welcomed as well. Thanks

You don't think too highly of it because your intuition is correct. There isn't anything really interesting about this. Just a snap shot. You're not showing us this an any other way then we would see by just standing there. I think you gotta get more creative with a subject like this.

Well, it's a nice play of leading lines from the telephone lines to the road which leads your eye from right to left. I think I might have positioned myself on the other side of the road to rid the photo of the lines. Maybe shooting from that side, up on a bank looking down upon the runners might have been a better shot. Remember, taking pictures from high and low angles often turn mundane pictures into interesting one. I think the shadow play running across the
road from a high angle would have made this photo.

very good quality well done however for future reference there are a few things that i think could make it better.

it would be better if you were at a different angle and zoomed in a little. When capturing sports it is much more appealing and attention grabbing if the main subject is moving toward the center instead of to the edge of the picture in this case the man in blue. much like the one below where the blue guy is taking off into the center.




It may be a little better if you would have taken a few steps to the right had the man in blue bigger running to the center and have the trail in the background.

Not a real fan of the position the runner is in. It makes him look like he is in pain or has gas!

Here's opinion as an amature photographer and runner, so it might not be worth much.

First as a runner. I don't like pictures of myself running when my front leg is at the forward extent of it's stride. I think those pictures always look funny. Also I prefer pictures that are taken closer to the beginning of the race, because I don't look quite as exhausted / tired. I know you said that you ran the 5k first so you didn't have much of a choice there.

Second as a photographer. I think his pants blend into the shadowy background. I also think that if you cropped it to a rectangle instead of a square it would look better. The track leads your eye away from the runner but the large sky above is a distraction from the vanishing point.

One thing that bothers me are the traffic signs in the back. My eye went directly pass the runner and towards them. Is there any reason why you didn't crop out something so distracting?
