Once again, I think I'm going to show a shot that I think was close but not quite. I have the philosophy that you learn more from mistakes than you do successes. So at any rate...
The Good Stuff: Model Canon EOS 50D ISO 12800 Exposure 1/640 sec Aperture 4.5 Focal Length 53mm What I like: I almost got his face and the ball. I think if I would have gotten this a second before or after, I might have gotten his whole face in the picture. I kind of like the composition. I does seem to convey action though. What I don't like: I only got part of the ball and didn't get a full on shot of his face. I think I needed to pull out a hair more. So what do you think? Should I have pulled out more and cropped later? I think I really need to work on that. |

I don't think the face is really the biggest deal, in this shot. The way everything is framed, I think his head being tilted up gives us the sense that he's going to the net (which we can see, clearly). I think, personally, It wouldn't have been as much of a pull out and crop than a half foot shift. Pulling out probably would've helped the aperture, and possibly brought down the grain, but all in all, I think it was a good shot.
I agree, it was very close. This is my first night on the forums, and I'm a student at Wayne State, so EMU and WSU caught my eye so I looked through a few, and they're really good...keep it up, can't wait to see what else you've got for us!

I'm still new, but in my opinion pulling out i think would help. For me visually, I would have liked to have seen the entire ball. Cutting off the ball to me was cutting off the subject, I know the player is the focus but the action of scoring points by sinking the ball is super important, and cutting the ball out of the shot takes away from that.
Hope this helps! |

Of course, it's hard to get it just right as fast as they're moving... so pulling out a little and cropping it just as tight might give you a better chance of getting the result you want. Nice shot, tho. Basketball is a tough one...
