Default Enough negative Space?

This is one of the best from my first try at action. I did remember to shoot wider to leave myself room to crop. My questions are...Is there enough negative space in front of the runner to run into? Is the subject looking back over the shoulder too centered in the frame? I do like the mom cheering in the back ground.

not bad. the background is quite busy, you could get in tighter and set your aperture wide open to make it have more impact. I see you have a 75-300mm so set it to 300mm and f/5.6 in aperture priority. You don't need to worry about shutter speed since it will be wide open you are going to have the fastest shutter speed possible to freeze the action.

Yes you have enough negative space. I would crop out the leg on the left edge as it is a eye grabber. But leave the lady in as she adds a dynamic to the image. Shooting wide open will help with the distracting background and should help make the players pop.

Something like this:

Thanks to you both. Next time I will open the apeture more to get rid of the distractions in the busy background to see what happens. I would then have missed the cherring mom, but you all are right. At first I was shooting at near full focal length of the lens, but was having difficulty tracking the action. It will get better with more practice.
