Default Kiteboarding

Hi everyone,

I took these pictures of someone doing this sport. As a gear I used a Nikon d7000 + sigma 10-20 f4-5.6. I want to get some suggestions about what pictures can i get, what angles to shoot in order to get some dramatic shots :

1.

For more pictures you can browse here

I would like, if possible, to tell me which is the best and, as i said before how can improve the quality of the pictures.

Thanks alot for your time.

You might want to take a look at this tutorial:

Balancing Flash and Ambient Light

First impressions:

I'd like less blue sky, especially at the top of the image, and more context for what the athlete is doing. Show me waves, splashing water, something besides sky.

The angle is interesting, but the very short lens has made the kite very small in the frame. I'd consider using a somewhat longer lens for this sort of low shot, and I'd also consider using a much longer lens and shooting from off to the side to compress the depth a bit.

HTH

I would second the recommendation to include the ground or water to give the image a sense of perspective. Nice shots, though. Unfortunately, clear blue skies are the most boring for photography.

I agree. Try and capture more of the scene around the action. It will really help tell a story and make the image more dynamic if there is water/land in the shot as well.

Hi guys,

First of all thank you very much for your critique. It was very useful.

I realize that that this kind of shots are kind of boring. Next time I will talk with the kiteboarder and try to convince him to jump or land somewhere as near to me as possible. Last time he was jumping to be in mid air right above me.

For me, as an amateur photographer it is a challenge to shoot pictures of this sport. But, in fact, this is what we are looking for. I have even built myself an underwater housing for my d7000.

On the other hand I have some difficulties framing the shots, as i cannot look through the viewfinder while shooting.

I am also thinking about using an external flash, but i'll have to build another housing for it. Also, i'm guessing i'll need an extra set of hands for holding the flash.

Anyways, thank you guys very much, and if you have any suggestions, i am willing to hearing them.

Have a nice day,
Radu

i agree with having either water or clouds to give perspective.

I disagree with everybody, Radu. I think if this picture had the water and waves as a point of reference for the viewer it would be just another boring shot. As you have it, I need to look longer and more carefully to figure out what's going on, making it more interesting, for me atleast... Like I said, if it had the water I would have moved on after a glance...sometimes confusion is the best captivator.

Hello,

First of all I would like everybody who replied in this topic. I am sorry I didn't do it before, but I was quite busy lately.

Anyway, I managed to shoot some kiteboarding photography, and here is the result. I would like to know your honest opinion if this shot ( or these shots if you watch the whole set ) have the "wow" factor. Also, as stated before, any suggestions are more then welcomed.

Exif data

Camera Nikon D7000
Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 12 mm
ISO Speed 400

Thank you for your time,
Radu
