Default Off road racing

The race season is almost upon me again, and I would like to be able to take better pictures.. I generally have my camera set on auto.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Attachments don't work, best to use a hosting site like Flickr.

To me it looks slightly out of focus (the complete shot) I would use shutter priority at about 1000 /second or faster and spot focus aiming at the helmet of the rider .When i zoom in and look at the water drops they are elongated which would be caused by the camera selecting too slow of a shutter speed .What sort of camera do you have ? I hope this helps with your next session , you can get some pratice before the next meet by going on the street and taking some shots of cars and bikes useing different shutter settings to help give you some idear of what works best.
