Default black belt test

Camera Nikon D700
Exposure 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 70 mm
ISO Speed 640
Exposure Bias +2/3 EV
Flash No Flash
Exposure Program Manual

black belt 18

I'm trying to shoot more without flash, and in this situation thought it would be distracting to the people testing. I played with settings, until I came up with something that I thought would be acceptable as far as blur and noise, I did not use a tripod, obviously that would help, but I like to move to much. I'm wondering if I could have done something better with the settings, is the blown out light from the windows to distracting?

Thanks!

I am new to photography so bear with me.Although I am new, I am a black belt myself. I like the lighting. For not using a flash this captured the colors of the subjects and the shadows in the gi's very well. The blowout from the windows isnt really distracting to me, but I do have a problem with the angle. Why did you chose that angle?

Thanks for the input. I cropped at that angle to cut out the distracting background, and I thought the angle added a bit more interest. .. right or wrong, that was my reason!

I didn't crop them all like that. the whole set is here, Black belt test - a set on Flickr, if you are interested in seeing them.

Thanks again!

Great set on Flickr. When I look at the whole set I do see that it does add interest. I remember when I tested. It was only myself,3 other brown belts who were testing also, my instructor and 5 other black belts.I was so nervous. Your set brought back some really good memories.

I have a black belt in Taekwondo. I like this shot - I wish someone had taken shots of me at my test! I think you have captured that flying side kick very well, especially with no flash. I don't think the blown out background hurts the shot in this case because it is pretty uniform and does not distract me from the action.

I really dislike those cockeyed angle shots because I always think the photographer is trying to make up for a weak image, but I understand you did it this time for cropping reasons.
