Default Girls basketball

Went to the local highschool and took a few pics trying to use the manual settings. I captured the action I wanted but the end results were not sharp. I used a nikon d90 with a prime 50mm set at f1.8, 800-1000 iso and 1/500-1/1000 shutter. I shot jpeg med. res.should have used fine. I only croped the photo.

This one I adjusted the light. http://www.flickr.com/photos/5927867...n/photostream/

Thanks Jim,
after a hundred plus shots I only had a couple worth posting. When I try to enlarge the image there is a haze around the ball and the players uniform. Is this noise? If I use a fine resolution will it help. Here's another pic, don't know if it showed up on the other post.

I like that shot. Girls can be pretty brutal on the court.

I'm going to move this to the critique forum.

When I shoot high school basketball, I try to keep the SS no slower than 1/500 and my preference is to shoot at 1/640 if possible. The lighting in most high school gyms is horrendous. Of course, I am usually at my widest aperture, since I'm shooting with either the 100 f/2.0 or 135 f/2.0, f/2.0 is where I am most at. The ISO is what I adjust to allow me to shoot at 1/500 or 1/640. That is usually enough to stop motion.

Thank you

Unless you are going to introduce lighting into your shooting, high ISO is the key. At our home gym, we have the absolute worst lighting ever, I mean ever...I don't know how the D90 performs at high ISO shooting, I've had to really crank mine up on the 7D. I still haven't figured out a good workflow for LR yet as far as noise reduction processing goes. I've heard the NR in Lightroom 3 is superb (I am still with LR2) but at the same respect, Noise Ninja is a really awesome program, either stand-alone or plugin for noise reduction.

Shoot in the largest file size you can. I also started shooting RAW only (mostly for white balance correction) or I will shoot JPG only when I am in a very well lit gym and satisfied with my test shots.

Thanks again Lori, those were the specific answers I needed to build on. I haven't used anything other than an early version of Photo shop which is outdated like me. Gives me something else to explore.

I, too, love your shots Lori. I have trouble with the local B-Ball courts also. Gonna try and up SS to freeze the action. My 5D should handle the increase in ISO, and LR3 is awesome at reducing noise. Never tried noise ninja though. Thanks for the tips.

You're welcome. Yes, the 5D will handle it just fine. I shot basketball with that for a brief moment too. It was wonderful!

ElCapitan shoots with a 5DII also, High School Basketball- Battle Ground Academy vs. Lancaster
