Okay, I've only been at this photography thing for about 2-weeks now, but I thought I'd try shooting some high school basketball.
I shot these with a Nikon D70 using a Sigma 70-300 4-5.4 lens. ISO 1600 at 160 shutter speed. I tried using a flash but found the exposure to be too bright and I was worried about zapping the kids in the eyes. As it is, I think these shots are a bit on the soft side. ![]() Link to Photo Link to Photo Link to Photo Last edited by lputman; 02-07-2011 at 02:32 PM. Reason: 1 photo for critique |

They are soft. Because using a low shutter speed of 160, it wasn't enough to fully stop the action.

The motion blur and softness is definitely there. I would definitely advise you figure out your flash and use it. For basketball my settings are: Tv Mode - ISO 1600, Shutter Speed 1/250th flash set to 1/6th power with a bounce card attached to the flash. I have talked to many of the athletes I have photographed and they say that they do not even notice the flash, the only time I turn the flash off is for foul shots.
