Default Cyclocross

I like to take pictures but would love to make them photographs. My main opportunity to take pictures is at local cycling races because I am usually in the first race of the day. Here is one from our state championships yesterday. I look at the work of some "professional" photographers that attend these event and can never seem to get quality shots like them.

Please help! I don't know a lot about photography and am stuck shooting in either aperture, shutter, or auto modes.

Just general c&c is welcomed. Is there anything in particular that can enhance the photo?

Exposure 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture f/4.2
Focal Length 75 mm
ISO Speed 320
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash No Flash
Exposure Program Shutter speed priority AE

Personally, I don't mind the angled perspective. However, the arms being cut off would be a turn off to most looking at the picture.

I don't think you did a bad job here. I agree, the arms cut off doesn't help the shot, but I don't mind the angled perspective, it adds a dynamic feel to the photo.

It looks like you have the equipment and vantage point to get some great images, just keep experimenting, try showing the riders in their environment by including one or two other elements in the frame to give it a sense of place.

And as far as shooting in aperture mode, I shoot 90% of the time in Aperture priority mode. It works well and allows you to control both the shutter speed and aperture with a single zip of the dial.

Also, try to identify what you're trying to say in these shots. What do you want to communicate? It just takes time and practice, keep at it and you will improve.
