1600 on the XSi is extremely noisy, barely usable... I had one.

We're talking about the XS, not XSi and it's better than missing the shot completely. I use ISO 6400 regularly and 12800 on occasion on my 50D and some people will say those are too noisy.

True, but at least you'd be able to SEE the action

Working with the limits of the camera and lens, he's going to have to go with a lower shutter speed or get really, really good at removing noise in post.
