Smile cheering-motion class assignment

we have an assignment for motion in my photo class. was at the football game last night, and playing with my shutter priority. i know the white rail is distracting to the composition, but i want to know about the movement in the picture.

I think if you got on the other side of the railing and shot down the line of girls with the one on the end in focus, it would have made a better picture. Then you wouldn't have that white light pole in the background either. Remember, ask yourself before pressing the shutter button. Compose in the viewfinder and move around to crop out all distractions. But, yes, the answer to your question, it does show motion.

I would up the shutter a bit to try to freeze their faces, but leave their arms in motion.

Slow Sync Flash
This technique came to my mind, maybe you should try the "Rear and Front Curtain Sync"

What I'm wondering is, instead of a general inquiry about motion -- if there was a specific quality of motion that you were looking to show.

I guess this is a long-winded way of saying "more playing with the shutter speed" . By upping it just slightly, you might've been able to get the heads and bodies more focused but still had some motions in the batons twirling. Is that what you were going for?

quite honestly, i dont know what i was going for. I have several shots at different shutter speeds. those are actually their arms moving in a circular motion. I did really like the effect that i got from the arm, but the the rest was questionable to me. I didnt have access to a straight line view of the girls and to get them head on, i would have had to be in the stands. thanks for all the comments, i will have to try again with a slightly faster shutter!
thanks again!
