Default Nike Basketball League Hong Kong 2010

My friend participated in the Hong Kong Nike basketball League 2010, he got me over to get some shots of him. I am quite an amateur photographer so ... i pretty much shot this entire set in "Sports Mode" on my 40D.

In the future, what settings do you guys recommend if I want to try use Tv?
- shot in jpeg?
- recommended shutter speed?
- iso?
- any other equipment required? flash?...tripod?

1. Do you guys think the color selection works? B&W background ... focus on the player?
2. Do you guys think that the overall photo is sharp enough on the focused player?

Jab Step

Exif data:
Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 102 mm
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire

Thanks for looking! Any comments appreciated!

Jason

Hey Jason.

For me, this photo does not work because I am not a fan of selective coloring. The photo is too dark.

When I shoot basketball, I shoot manual. I bump my ISO up so I can have a shutter speed no slower than 1/500 to stop action. I used a 50 f/1.8 on a 1.6 crop and 100 f/2.0 on a FF and now the 1.3 crop. I usually have to do noise reduction in post on my pc.

I agree with Lori concerning the darkness of the pic, it is quite a bit underexposed. Get off sports mode and use Manual for indoor basketball, as the lighting condition isn't going to be changing from shot to shot. I aim for 1/400 minimum, preferable 1/800 with lens wide open (I use the 70-200 f/2.8L) and ISO to match, usually from 3200 to 12800.

Thanks for both your suggestions!
It was my first time shooting in a basketball game, didn't really have any experience with settings.
I will make sure to shoot in manual, widest aperture, 1/400 - 1/800 shutter speed
, next time
Another simple question, do you think the overall composition is decent?

Obviously, we don't have too much control over what might come into frame of a photo that we are taking. For this particular photo, if you were able to snap without the defensive player in it, it would have been better.
