Default Seems "plain"...

I like the timing of the jump, but it seems kind of "plain". Would a different angle and/or framing be better for this type of shot?

My Opinion, a different angle would give more depth on height of jump, placement of horses legs and more dimension of the horse and rider. I would think a 30-45 degree angle would be good, so you could pick up the facial expression of the rider too.

This pic IMO is more focused on rider, and if you zoomed in would be good.

Cropping would help. Remember crop out all that wasted space. My eye seem to want to travel around the photograph. Also use a lower f-stop to blur out the background. By doing that, your eye won't travel beyond the subject and it will also give you a higher shutter speed so that you won't be getting any blurry feet. Here's how I cropped.

Panning would be a good idea. I would have taken the shot beside where the horse "takes off" to show the action.

I agree with Jim, although I wouldn't have cropped it exactly like that. There's too much in the scene that is "strong" to detract the eye (the green hurdle stands, etc) Removing them and cropping tighter to focus attention where you want it will help. Other angles could be good as well, but this angle is good for this and has strong potential.

Try using a bit shallower depth of field, the background is as strong as the horse and rider, taking away from their potential.
