Default Sortin' - Exposure Advice Needed

Hi,
I had the opportunity to shoot a roping and branding session this weekend. Unfortunately, the best place (for viewpoint and safety) for me to shoot from was sitting on 5 foot pipe fence (and not super safe when the cows were trying to run from the horses), anyway, this positioned me where I had to shoot directly into the sun. So my issue...light background, dark horses and cattle, action, so no time to bracket...any suggestions on what I can do differently the next time, exposure, filters??? or fixes in post???

Thanks as always for your comments.

Sounds like you worked hard to get the shots you did.

I am not one to comment on the exposure because I still struggle with that myself. I would see if you can capture a clearer subject. It seems there are competing subjects.

I would...
  • Try shooting through the fence from a lower angle to get a different and additional viewpoint
  • shoot tighter, that may give the picture a clearer subject

Take it with a grain of salt

Keep shooting

under the circumstances you describe you will have expose for the subjects and just let the background blow out. You will need to shoot in manual or if you choose an auto mode you will need to shoot with + exposure compensation.

Any filter you put on your camera will effect the entire shot. If your position and the position of the subject didn't change too much you could use a graduated ND filter but that doesn't sound like the case here.

In post you *may* be able to pull some of the overexposed background back into the image but if it's too far blown there is not much to recover.

Bracketing would have been nice because then you could blend a properly exposed background with a properly exposed subject in post.
