Lightbulb attempt at action 1: equestrian event.

From Drop Box

EXIF Summary: 1/320s f/7.1 ISO200 18mm

Camera-Specific Properties:
Equipment Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS REBEL T1i
Extras: circular polarizer

though there may be many things wrong with this photo as i am very new to DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T1i) i would like critique on two aspects.

question 1: i am using a Hoya circular polarizer and im wonder if i have set it properly. i think there may be a bit of a blue tint to the photo is that because of the polarizer or because i have not set the white balance properly.

and question 2: i struggle constantly with proper exposure and ISO settings. for an action shot are my settings here correct to demonstrate the story of action here, as well as technically correct?

also let me say that due to my skill level (beginner) i am currently concentrating on correct exposure and correct composition. my post processing skills are limited due to skill and programming (apple iphoto).

i really hope this is the proper way to link to my photo.

a very appreciative

Glizzy!

In regards to exposure, this image looks underexposed. While you have the sky nice and blue, the rider and horse are too dark and they should be your subject.

In the area of composition, your subject should NOT be centered unless filling the frame. Zoom in closer and cut out the sky, observers, etc and leave a good, clean image that draws the viewer to the subject.

In regards to showing action, there is a slight motion blur on the horses hooves, which is good for showing motion, though you might try a slower shutter speed to show more movement, while panning with the subject. OR try a faster shutter speed to completely freeze the subject. I would suggest shooting some both ways and see what you like better.

One other note: opening your aperture up to your max aperture will help blur the background, helping the subject to pop.

Here's an example of how I would shoot/crop the image if it were mine. I also brightened the subject a bit. If you object to me editing your image, let me know and I'll remove it immediately.
