Default Tricks on a rock!

XSI

f/7.1

1/100 sec.

ISO - 400

32mm

No PP was done.

It was my first time shooting any sport. My shutter speed was way to slow i'll have to watch that next time. Other than that what do you guys think>

I don't think there's a problem with the shutter speed. However, it does seem a tad under exposed. Other than that, it's not bad.

Thanks GadgetRick.

I only thought that it was too slow since i have some motion blur with his arms. A faster shutter speed would fix this, no?

Personally, I think the motion blur with his arms works. Conveys a bit of movement so i think it adds to the pic.
Nice shot.

Yes, a faster shutter speed would help with motion blur. However, a faster shutter speed--without changing something else--would make this farther under exposed. You might try opening your aperture for this one. You don't need a TON of depth of field but don't go too wide.

Depending on your camera, you could also go higher with your ISO.

Either of these changes (or both) will allow you to shoot at a higher shutter speed.

Also, keep in mind, some motion blur in action shots isn't always a bad thing. In this case, it doesn't really detract from the image although it wouldn't hurt to freeze all of the action either.

Well i guess you can say i was going for the full freeze effect. Does my motion blur only work and not detract from the image because it is minimal. What if the feet of the skate boarder was just as bluryas his hands would it still work? im thinking not...

Thanks for alll your help.

That would be a frontside blunt (the trick haha). Motion blur to a certain degree makes a shot like this. I like the blur in his arm,if it was his face or whole body...it wouldn't look to good.

If your shooting skateboarding ever again ask for the fella to do some kickflips and play with your shutter speeds to get a feel on blur. You'll get a good idea with that trick.

Looks good to me too. The motion doesn't bother me, but I think I'd like it better frozen too (or if the feet/board showed motion instead of the hands).

Default Try a different angle next time

This shot wold have been sweet if you had been below the board shooting up at the skater... a bit late for could have's though. I agree that there is a lighting issue.

I absolutely quote this.

Motion blur MUST be there to convey the idea of movement...
