Man, that 50mm lens is just too loose Rick. The focal point of action is the one kid pining the other one centered in the photo. That's the picture, not all the distracting stuff around it. I know you're pretty limited with that particular lens and can't get in closer, but, maybe a tighter crop such as this would help. Remember to crop all those unnecessary items out of the photo. My eye wants to travel around the photo and see everything, including the fat guy in back. So crop for impact. Here's two ways, tighter and a bit looser.

I agree with Jim. I might have cropped a little looser than he, but not much.

Thanks. I'm always struggling with how much to crop. Sometimes I crop too much, sometimes not enough. How do you determine how much to crop? I do like yours much better!

How to determine when to crop? Where there's too much distracting stuff in the background I suppose. Like anything else, sometimes it takes awhile. I normally crop tightly in my camera, but I have the 28-70 and 70-200 lenses to do that for me. I always feel that vert. or much stronger than a hort. photo. But, I try to crop the photo, so that my eye doesn't travel around it too much.

Unfortunately, that's tough to do in a wrestling match where there's ALWAYS stuff going on in the bg.

I'm with you on vert vs. horz pics, too. I just forget and get lazy sometimes.

You can always crop a horz into a vert.

Here's a link to the shots I got of the Championship rounds of yesterdays Mat Classic. The Kitsap posted about 17 to their website. Three Kitsap Wrestlers Bring State Titles Back From Tacoma » Kitsap Sun

Very nice Jim. What are the particulars on how you shot these? Flash? Lens? What ISO were you shooting at?

Just shot a tournament yesterday with the 50D--my first real pics with it. Lighting was not great but I got manageable results. Here are some of the photos, still pp more...

Picasa Web Albums - GadgetRick - Wrestlting To...

Shot with the 50D, 50mm, f2.0, ISO 1600

I did run Noise Ninja because the lighting was bad and I did get some noise. Plus I had to crop quite a bit so the noise was more noticeable.
