Spent the afternoon at Rillito Park in Tucson AZ. Haven't done a lot w/ panning shots but this turned out the best of what I got.
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125) Aperture: f/10.0 Focal Length: 112 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: +2/3 EV ![]() Complete set at: 2010-02-14 Rillito Park - a set on Flickr |

Very nice pan shot!
The only thing--and this may be a personal preference--I'd like to see higher shutter speed (if possible) to capture the horse's legs better so there's no motion blur. The pan blur in the background will convey enough movement (imo). Other than that, I love the shot! |

Why f/10? the camera picked it. I was in exposure mode. Started at 1/30 (nothing in focus) and worked my up the speed spectrum till 1/125. I figured much higher speeds and I may not get the background blur. true? false? To Ricks suggestion though with a higher speed his feet would have been stopped better.
This was somewhat cropped I'll look at original to see if the tail is there. Thanks for the feedback. |

The blurred legs are a definite plus for me, since the rider and his # are sharp.
The whites on the rider's pants are a bit blown out, but likely not much could be done about that, given the lighting and that the horse is well-exposed. Very nice. |

I agree with the comments about cutting of the tail.
Motion blur on part of the subject is good (liked blurred wheels on racing cars.) A small aperture is not a problem if you have a "clean" background as it will be blurred anyway. However in this case all those buildings do make for a messy background. Try to shoot where you have a clear background.
