Question Extra Lens for Point and Shoot Camera DSC-H50

Hi,

I have recently bought Sony DSC-H50 and I have confusion regarding lenses.

The manual of the camera says we can attach extra conversion lens to it and the camera also has an option to choose between "telescopic" or "wide angle" depending on the type of lens attached.

My question is that what is a "conversion" lens and how it is different from other lenses which are generally available for SLRs. For example, is it possible to attach lens for achieving very shallow depth of field (bokeh effect) to my camera?

Thanks in advance

I'm not too familiar with the DSC H50 but it looks like it the lens is part of the camera and not a mount. So, I don't think you can use traditional SLR lenses on it. I did find some info on Adorama. Here is the link Sony DSC H50 - Adorama.com If you want the ability to swap lenses and not use conversions I think you'd need a true SLR. Again, I'm not familiar with that model so I could be wrong. If I am, hopefully someone will chime in and correct me.

Conversion lenses are completely different from SLR lenses.

A conversion lens is like a big filter you put in front of the fixed lens in a point and shoot camera to get wider or more telephoto effect. It usually degrades optical quality of the lens, but since you can't actually swap out a fixed lens, it's the only option you have. They're much like teleconverters on the SLR side of the fence.

With an SLR lens, the entire lens assembly is interchangeable--much higher quality, and much more extreme differences are possible.
