Hey, it is a pleasure to have "knowledge" on your side when dealing with photographic decisions. The more, the better.

I went back to post # 10 and edited in the APS-C conversions to the list of TAMRONs, so you would know how the various focal lengths respond when placed on the a700. For the new camera-jockeys, the relative aspects are kind of pointless, but for a SLR veteran, lens selection is important with these "digital crop" focal lengths factored in.

Good luck ... and by all means, enjoy the change!

Default Vivitar 28-300

Thanks Don, for the nice explanation.

Is Vivitar 28-300mm 4-6 a good lens to pick up. Also it has some fungus. can it be cleaned or its not worth buying?

ciao

Lightbulb The lens to have ... until the rest come along

Although I normally do not recommend it, the TAMRON AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) ... would be a better choice, optimally, the TAMRON AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) would be THE choice of all lenses, to get the most bang for your buck.

The lens covers most of the bases ...and provides dynamite image quality of all the "all-in-one" zooms. This would be the one I would concentrate on getting and stay away from "fungus." That's no way to treat a camera. Normally, if fungus has claimed the lens ... it is time for a new one.

There is also the idea of using a couple of PRIME lenses for your work, like a 50mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.4

The Rokinon MF 85mm f/1.4 lens, on an a700, is quite a combination. While this lens is manual aperture, manual focus lens ... it is sharp as heck and super bright. You can get it for around $289

With this manual lens, if you put the a700 is A-mode ... the internal metering (when you half-press the shutter) will take care of the proper exposure setting with the shutter speed, automatically. Just focus and shoot. If you need to adjust the exposure, you can use the exposure +/- offset to get it right. Also, the DRO option can bring light where there was none.

It is a great option and allows you some low light response you just cannot get from a zoom.

Talking sakar telephoto & macro 85-210, 3.8

Hi Don

Picked up above glass in mint condition along with XD-7, 50 mm, 1.7 MD and 200X flash

Have you come across this lens? Its made in Japan and must have been purchased in UK in late 70s.

Any review on this. Sakar has taken over Vivitar

ciao

Honestly, I think it's a little too early for any kind of Internet evaluation of the lens. I, personally, have never owned a Sakar lens. It might be pre-1985, by my estimation. I have not located any Sakar AF-mount lenses.

Here is a SAKAR MC 80-200mm f/3.9, which is relatively close to what you have. Not too much on it, though. You would need an adapter ring to make use of it on the a700.
