I have started buying older Minolta glass and I am very happy. It is a great way to beat the new glass pricing blues.

Beyond the camera itself, I don't even look at the Sony brand. I just purchased two nice Tamron lenses that will last me until I either become a very well paid professional or become to old and shaky to hold the camera. (The latter being more likely!) From everything I've read, Tamron makes a product that competes on the level of the Sony brand, but costs much less...seems like a no brainer for me. I love Sony products, but I'm not interested in paying the extra money for a logo.
Lee also has the right idea in finding old Minolta stuff. I have a Minolta 50mm that I got on Ebay for a song and it works great.

Some of the higher end SONY lenses are on promotion, so you can go back to FY2008 pricing.
In the meantime, I am considering by-passing this sale and creating one of my own design ....using SONY's current pricing as leverage to acquire SIGMA near-comparable lensing ... and more. If your budget allows and depending on what it is you need in your lens bag, now (Spring 2010) is, perhaps, the best time to buy glass.
