Best Action Lens?

I have a Sony alpha 330 dslr camera. I mostly take action and potrait shots but I need the next size lens up for getting better football shots from the sidelines and better basketball shots inside. I have the 2 lenses that it came with (55-200 f/4-5.6 and 18-55 f/3.5-5.6.) I know I need something with a faster aperture but I'm not sure on which type like telephoto, zoom, ect.? I want to use it for taking portraits and taking action shots outdoors and indoors- night and day. I may not even get the next size up but I know I definitely need something with a better aperture. Please help!

70-200 f2.8 fast, versatile, slim pickins on Sony's lens line up. 3rd party lenses would work too...maybe a sigma 300f2.8 plenty fast but no zoom and not really a portrait lens Beyond the 70-200 everything else available seems pretty slow...
