Hi Totty,

Not too long ago I bought a Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G SSM and love it to bits. It's great for outdoor pics with decent light. I was lucky to get mine second hand at a good price, but it is available new for around your budget, give or take 50 quid. Being a 'G' lens, a definate upgrade too to what you have. I was blown away by it compared to the sony kit lenses I had previously been using.

Good review here : Sony 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G SSM review
Dedicated Flickr group for this lens : Flickr: Sony 70-300 G Lens
User Reviews : Sony*AF 70-300 F4.5-5.6 G SSM Reviews at Dyxum.com

Heres a few sample shots I have using it on a350 body, hope its all useful info and gives you some food for thought.

I have been looking at the Tamron 200-500MM lens. It sells for about $1000 USD here in the states. I could be interested in the Sigma 50-500MM if I find it for the right price.

I have a Sigma 400MM f5.6 prime. I keep thinking that an extra 100MM would be nice.

A look at the Dyxum Lens Database might help you. A-mount lens database (lenses for Minolta and Sony DSLR cameras)

Lightbulb Sounds like ...

The TAMRON SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD would be the perfect lens for what you have described and your modest budget.

If you can get to one, check it out and its surprising lightweight (42oz), compared to a 50-500mm f/4.5 lens (64 oz)

Yes Don, it was some of your photos that brought the Tamron lens to my attention. Looks like a great tool.

I have a Minolta 100-300mm AF. Not sure if it is APO, but really enjoy using it.

I am sure my Minolta 100-300mm is not APO. I checked by looking on ebay at the photos. I do love this lens, though wonder if the APO is significantly better.
