Default use of a700

Hi,
Since a few weeks I own an a700 (before an a100).
My problem -with the a700, not with the other : when I want to take a photo in P,A,S,or M modus, the mirror lifts up for a few seconds and only afterwards the photo is taken
Can anybody tell me wahat I am doing wrong?
Thanks

Sounds like you've got mirror lock-up set.

Yeah ... the 2-second mirror lock is set ... where it lifts the mirror after the shutter release is pressed.

If you look at the LCD settings window, you will probably note a timer-looking icon and right next to it, a "2"

This setting is usually reserved for use on a tripod, where you would normally shut off the SSS (to stop the anti-shake sensor assembly from going squirrelly due to a lack of movement feedback) and you want the camera to be as vibration-free as possible.

When you press the release, the mirror inside lifts and waits for 2-seconds, allowing the camera to steady-up, then the shutter opens at the shutter speed you have selected for the shot.

To stop this mirror delay from happening and return to NORMAL shutter release:

1) Turn camera on
2) Press the "DRIVE " button on the top of the a700
3) On the menu displayed on the back, select the SQUARE (1st selection)
4) Half-press the shutter release to activate the new setting.

It should now return the camera back to NORMAL, SINGLE SHOT release functionality.

Also, if you are using the included "Remote Commander" device, there are two release buttons that are on it. One is the NORMAL shutter release and the other, the 2-second shutter delay release.

Let me know if this does not work for you.

BTW: Here are the various "DRIVE" selections available on the a700:

Drive mode (turn front dial whilst pressed to change setting)

• Single frame advance
• Continuous advance (turn rear dial to swap between L and H modes)
• Self-timer (turn rear dial between 10 or 2 seconds)
• Continuous bracketing (press up/down to select exposure step)
• Single frame bracketing (press up/down to select exposure step)
• White balance bracketing (press up/down to select Hi / Lo step)
• DRO bracketing (press up/down to select Hi / Lo step)
• Remote control (using supplied wireless remote)

Talking Glad to be of service

Antoon ... understanding the operation of your camera is critical to using it effectively. Just sit down for a couple of nights and read through the manual and try out the different functions. Do not rush it. If you do not understand a function or get messed up ... write back.

I am glad to be of help as I can.

Now ... go shoot something great!
