To ring in the new year, Ana and I decided to start a 365 project over at One year photo | 365 days of light and color. We decided to choose a theme, but I wanted something that wouldn't back us in to a corner when it came to finding an image for every day. We went with "Light & Color." We're going to try to shoot something with interesting use of either light or color, or both, though some days may be more literal than others.
I can't promise we'll be posting to the blog every day, but we're sure going to try to get at least one image for every day of 2012. ![]() Happy new year, and here's to a great new project

Day two: Day two | One year photo
![]() D700+50mm f/1.4G | 1/60s, f/1.4 @ ISO1600 Yesterday an iPhone, today a D700, maybe tomorrow my Sony NEX-5n will arrive. This one is a little bit of both light and color. I always love how the angle and character of the light can affect textures. Ana was having a little bit of fun with a stop sign. The sodium street light gives it that yellowish tint, and I like the way the flakes were catching the light and sparkling. I took a few others from more direct angles, but the image lost a lot of depth–partly because the shadows flattened out, and partly because you didn’t get as much background.

Day three | One year photo
![]() D700+50mm f/1.4G | 1/60s, f/4 @ ISO800 (Ana wrote today's entry) Today we had a few very different photos to choose from. So far, I’m finding the editing process more difficult than getting images. I think Jamie took this with the D700 and a 50. I liked this photo mainly because it’s such an ordinary sight that showcases color wonderfully. Wear and tear have left the white not so bright, but it’s the blue that impresses me. From the top of the staircase to the view out the window, it sort of takes over everything.

Day four | One year photo
![]() This is something I walk past every day at work, and there’s just something about the bright red fittings against the light beige background that grabs my attention. It’s in the guts of a back stairway of my building, and the whole thing is very monochromatic aside from this piece of equipment. It’s the D700 and 50 again … everything I ordered with the Sony NEX 5N came in, but not the camera. I’m hoping it won’t take long, but it shows up as backordered pretty much everywhere.

Day five | One year photo
![]() Back to the iPhone. I grabbed this shot on my way in to work this morning. Normally, it’s dark when I get there, but I had a meeting at one of our other sites, so I didn’t get to my office until around noon. One of the problems with living in Ohio in January is that the days are pretty short, and it’s generally overcast. This makes it really hard to do a photoblog about light and color. We do, on occasion, get a day with direct sunlight. Today happened to be one of those days. One upshot of the short days is that the sun doesn’t get very high in the sky, so you still get pretty good shadows, even at noon. I liked the way the light was coming through the metal grate, casting the long lines down the side of the car. I did a little bit of work with it in Camera+, to bump the contrast a little and adjust some color.

Day six | One year photo
![]() This is probably my favorite photo so far. For Christmas, Jamie got this small metal wind-up toy that sparks as it rolls across the floor. Deciding we wanted a picture of it in action was the easy part. Execution was a tad more difficult. This is also the first time we’ve uploaded photos, looked through them, and I’ve been the one to suggest going back and getting more shots. I wasn’t happy with the toy shown just idly spinning. I liked the effect it created moving across the frame. It was too dark to use auto focus, so we pre-focused and tried to get the toy in the right spot. Shutter speed was just under two seconds. Because of the unpredictable path of the toy, we used a small aperture to get a little more depth of field.

Day seven | One year photo
![]() Just a quick iPhone food shot today. We went out to dinner with family, and the light above our table was broken, so it was pretty dark. There was light falling on the table from another light farther away, and it gave it that sort of “window of light” effect.

Day eight | One year photo
![]() The moon was interesting tonight. It was full (or nearly), and there were lots of thin clouds, which gave it a really diffuse, hazy glow. I grabbed the D700 and headed over by the pond, because I thought it might be nice to shoot the moon through the reeds. I shot some reflections in the pond too, but I didn’t feel like it read well enough. I might try it again another night. When I was out there, I was cursing the streetlights, because I couldn’t get away from them, and they were giving everything a weird tint. Coming back and looking at the images on the computer, I decided I liked the drastic color difference between the moonlight and the sodium vapor.

Day nine | One year photo
![]() No complaining about typos, I’m on an iPad. Just a little behind in posting. This one is from Monday, had really nice light on the way home from work. Shot the steam coming out of this pipe on the roof of my parking garage. There was actually some really nice light hitting the clouds on the way home, but driving and photographing don’t really go together.
