Default Brenzier - Snow Portrait

Hi. This is a Brenizer style shot made up of 30 images stitched in Autopano Pro then cropped to size.

Taken using Nikon D70 with 50mm f/1.4 lens at f/1.8, Aperture Priority. White balance set to "Sun" preset, incorrectly - hence the blue tinge (know for next time!).

My first Brenizer and my first photo published to DPS as new into Photography.

Feedback appreciated, especially on composition but also on anything else.

Thanks!

Caroline - Snow

Hello and welcome to DPS!

Since you say this is a portrait and you ask for opinions on composition, I have to tell you that your subject is very small compared to the entire scene, you need to get closer to your subject. That's just my 2 cents, I'm sure others will have more comments.

i would have like to have seen the girl leaning with her back to the tree with a semi closeup of her torso or at least from just above the waist, looking away from the camera with her in focus and the background right out of focus.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

You both seem to suggest cropping in much closer - which I agree with. The balance I am trying to get though is that it is meant to be a 'Brenizer' style shot, and there is only any point in doing this if you're trying to get that 'medium format' look of lots in the image but a shallow DoF.

Even so, I think you're both right. I'll try another crop.

When I first look at your picture, I can see the shallow DoF from the Brenizer method, however, it doesn't seem to really stand out. I my opinion the best portraits using the Brenizer method are closer to the subject (as suggested with the tighter crop comments) however since the original was taken from a greater distance I'm not sure just cropping some more will give the desired effect.Next time I would try taking the series of frames a little closer to the subject. You would need less cropping and get a shallower DoF.

Mexon - great advice. Many thanks and I'll try that out.
