Default Sunlight through mist

G'day, this is the first photo I have posted on DPS. It was taken with my Panasonic point & shoot camera (I now have a Pentax K20D).

I woke up one morning and when I saw the mist outside I rushed out to try to capture the magical look but the original pic did not look how I remembered it.

I did the old 'copy the layer, heavy blur and multiply layer style' trick and it looked more like how it felt at the time.

I did not change anything else apart from that, does it look over-processed?

Any comments or criticisms welcome.

Cheers,

Gerard

Hey Gerard,

The effect is fantastic. I get emotion from this photo that I know would be different had it been a classic "sharpened" image. Is the effect as simple as you described? What kind of blur did you apply...if you don't mind?

Fantastic shot, very nice processing in my opinion.

Thanks Shea, yes the effect is pretty simple. To go into more detail: You duplicate the layer and change the layer style of the new layer to multiply, (at this point I usually lighten the image on the new layer because the multiply layer style will darken the final result).

Then apply a heavy gaussian blur to the new layer and you get the dreamy effect. Give it a try!

Cheers,

Gerard

I think that blur technique works really well - I'll have to try that myself, as I've always been disappointed when I've tried to capture foggy scenes. As an additional comment, that scene looks like it has a wide dynamic range and you have captured it about as well as possible without resorting to HDR techniques. Very nice shot, congratulations!
