Default Black and White Conversion

I decided to start messing around with black and white for the next month or so, and here's the first one I've tried. Played around with this a bit in GIMP, and I used several layers to get good tonality in the clouds, wall, and people. Wondering if there was anything else I could have done to achieve a better end effect. If you have any other recommendations about the digital black and white process in general, please let me know.

Other critiques on the composition/exposure/whatever are welcome and appreciated as well!

Black and White - Band, Wall, and Sky

Thanks guys.

I really like this photo. The dramatic clouds and the black and white make it very powerful.
I'm not entirely sold on there being so much of the building in view. But. i'd be careful in how much ios cropped as you'd lose the images edge that it has now.

Thanks windrider! Looking back on it I wish I had taken some more frames with different compositions, but this was the best I had... so I'll work with what I got

You did a great job. I was just logging in to post a picture I just converted to B/W in GIMP as well!

Did you take it in b&w or desaturate it or channels or what?

I just learned about b&w with channels haha.
