Red face 1st HDR attempt... well 1st post, 2nd HDR

Roots of a fallen tree at Mt. Rainier

I have been cruising this site for a month or so and have only been shooting a little longer. I'm hesitant to post in the critique section for my first post, but I thought what the hay, just jump in . This may be an odd subject, but the original needed more, so why not HDR it.

I want to know if it's too much HDR and what you think I could have done in PP for a better picture.

I used Qtpfsgui for tone mapping and Gimp 2.6 for other editing.

Taken with a P&S Sony Cyber-shot
7.9mm
1/15s
f/2.8
ISO: 100

Default needs more contrast

I am curious if you have the original? It is too much monotone for my taste - play with it a few ways - darken highights, etc give it some punch - it is interesting and I would have tried it, too. Good learning shot.

Fallen tree roots hdrAttempt2

I bumped up the contrast and darkened it a little. Is there more POP now? Comparing this one to the first and the original I like this one better. I was just worried that it would turn out a little toony. What do you think?

Thanks for checking this out and replying bebo1998.

I've never tried HDRs, but to me a lot of them are taken too far and don't even resemble a photograph. Perhaps that's the idea, I'm not sure. To me this looks more like 'art', perhaps a painting. If that's what you are after then you've got it, if not, good practice and keep trying

Maybe I'll give it a try sometime soon so I know what I'm talking about

yah this one is a tad bit over done. Looks more like a comic book picture than a hdr.

HDR won't make an average photo good. Your subject seems to blend in too much with the objects around it, and HDR won't help that. Perhaps some detail of those tangly roots would have worked better?

Thank you all for your comments. I agree that the subject is not ideal for HDR and that the second one may be a little overdone. Thanks again for checking this out.
