can someone tell me why...

i took this shot and added some gradient filters in lightroom. can someone tell me why when i upload it to the internet the magenta filter doesnt appear smooth?
if you look by the girls arm the color drops off suddenly BUT when i view the jpeg file on my computer its runs smoothly right into her forearm.

I would guess that the answer to your question is that once the image is published on the Internet all that are visible are "web safe colors." Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Consider yourself corrected ;-) "web safe colours" are a thing of the past when 24-bit display modes were very uncommon, don't worry about it.

My bet is that you're working in a non-sRGB colour model and then publishing on the internet. Most browsers assume that all images are sRGB. By converting to sRGB (or shooting+working in sRGB in the first place) you should be able to fix this.
