Well... not trying to sound mean... but I'm having trouble interpreting your post.
First, you're talking about colorization, but the photo is almost devoid of color -- only the face is a really noticeable color, everything else is very subtle or b&w. Second, the background is... sporadic? As in, mostly white with some flecks? It is "barren" I think too. But those are unusual ways to describe this. I would say that this is an interesting, highly processed image. The harsh light and lack of color gives me a definite feeling of a difficult environment, which is good -- that's also what I think of when I see a guy carrying his mountain mike on his back! When it comes to bland backgrounds -- I think you've done fairly well. In general, my solution is to come in closer, to avoid having the background show up at all. But what you've done here works well, because it emphasizes (what I think is) the message.

I've moved this thread over to critique. I agree with what's been said by dcclark. It doesn't seem overly colourised, but it does seem highly processed.

Great Shot! I love the composition and the colors...and/or lack there of. Well done!
The only thing that bothers me is the lack of detail on the body of your subject... seems like just a pure black hole to me. Even then it's still a great capture.
