Default Vintage Look - Annie and the Sailboat

I hope this isn't against the rules, I posted this in 'Share your Shots', but now I am quite keen for a critique, so posting it again here.

Annie and the Sailboat

I am mainly looking for feedback on the treatment of the photo. I really tried to give it a vintage look, and I am quite pleased with the result.

Unfortunately my EXIF data isn't in tact after my manipulation, but I shot it with a Canon 400D, and from memory the apperture was around 5.6

I manipulated levels somewhat first, to give it more of a washed out look, and then applied this texture over the top, set the mode of the layer to overlay, and then dialed down the opacity.

So I guess I'm looking for critique of the success of the effect. Any other critique about the shot at all is also very welcome.

Thanks

Well, I like it a lot. ^^
Is the focus supposed to be a little off? I think the main focus now is on the boat. At least I find myself looking at the boat automaticly.
Otherwise, I think you did an excellent job with the vintage look!!

I think you did a good job--looks like you dug it out of a box from the back of the closet--it even has that faded look of older photos. I think it would have been nice if the lady in the from were in clear focus and l the little sailboat a little out of focus. I am no expert, but from first glance that's what I see--hopes this helps some.

Thanks for your feedback guys!

I actually took this photo almost 12 months ago, and hadn't done much with it due to the focus. It was a surprise shot at the time, I took it quick so it was unposed (nothing creepy though, she is my partner! ) and the AF focussed on the boat.

That was part of the inspiration for the vintage look in the end, I felt that the vintage cameras may have had more trouble with the full focal range, and the fact the Annie is out of focus added to the effect.

I kind of like the eye going to the boat first, then to Annie as it relaxes to take in the whole photo... but I am obviously biased, and really appreciate your comments. It's always great to see your own photo through someone elses eyes.

Thanks again!

We strongly discourage cross-posting (using the same image in more than one place within 24 hours) but you've left more time than that and the picture has been further worked on since first posted so no problems there.

I think you've definitely improved the image with the extra work but let the more detailed critiques keep rolling.

Thumbs up

Firstly I absolutly love this effect, it is very well done. I am usually not one to do vintage effects but I am sonna have to try it out now when I find the right shot because this is inspiring me (: Great work. I think, imho, the focus in the shot and the way my eye is drawn between her and the boat is neat. I like how theyre both subject here, and the framing of this with you effect adds even more. I cant really say anything negative, its awsome.

(not much of a critique ha )

I think this turned out well, any flaw in the picture would only enhance the vintage/worn look of it. This photo looks like a legitimate photo that has been sitting in a shoebox for 30 years. I love these kind of photos.

On the other hand I find it amusing that I have been paid money to fix pictures that look like that and know the trend is to make picture look old. We live in a wonderful world.
