It's surreal.
Personally I would crop about 2 inches below the jetty so there's no blue. I think the eye would be drawn to the sole colour of the jetty and also the jetty won't be in the middle which isn't normally a good thing in the rule of thirds. Would make a good book cover. Something like this. Last edited by blarg; 01-16-2009 at 01:37 AM. |

It is very artificial looking. Was that gradient from the bottom the result of the long exposure rather than any post-processing?

I do have to admit the overall effect is interesting. But, the biggest problem I think is not knowing what it is

I was sitting back looking at this image, and looking. It has depth if nothing else. But then what else do you need.
I thought I would look down the replies as I knew there were going to be criticism of this one and I was right, and the comments were as I would expect. And I would add, I normally would agree with them on most things, but.......This is not just a photo that we want to look like a digicam image printed on a Kodak machine. As it looks to me now, if the original image is of good quality (preferably Raw), and the post processing done correctly, if the image were printed large poster size it would make a good display piece. Just one comment, it could do with cropping but not from the bottom. Looking at the image onscreen I have a piece of paper I use to cover parts of an image to get an idea on what they will look like. Tried one suggested, doesn't work. But I tried cutting the right side away 1-2cm from the end of the jetty (that's looking at the copy onscreen) and it gives more impack to the jetty. |

The gradient wasn't from post-work. The shoreline was right below me, so I'm guessing it just got darker from the rocks underneath that part of the water as opposed to the reflected sun on the water further out.
I'm still not real set on this, nor am I attached to it. I just wanted to put something up to Flickr due to inactivity for a while. Might end up just scrapping it, as I have shots that are very similar, and properly exposed. This just has color.

It looks like when someone fills in an area with a simple gradient and loses the realism of a scene. To be honest, if it were my shot, I think I'd drop it, move on and take some more. Treat it as scaffolding for moving on, not a completed edifice.
